Europeans & Asian Commerce 

  • Europeans wanted commercial connections with Asia 
  • Europeans wanted Eastern products, mainly spices
  • After the Black Death Europe built a substantial military 
  • Problems from the old trade rout through the Indian Ocean Trade Network made cities become international trades
Indian Ocean Trade 


  • Made the Portuguese very rich because they were in control but they did not have goods to trade therefore made no complication
  • To keep control on comers the Portuguese set piracy on the sea 
  • Created a trading post empire 
Spain Unpaid labor 

  • 1600 Portuguese trading post was declined 
  • Spain challenged the Portuguese & controlled Asias trade 
  • Spain established a base in the Philippines having control from 1565-165
Silver & Global Comers 

  • Silver was more important than spices in the global exchange network 
  • Mid 16th century Bolivia & Japan had a great demand for for silver but both were not in a stable place at the moment
  • Chines economy was huge, the demand on silver increased causing the price range to increase
  • Silver was mainly used to trade for Asian spices & for African slaves
  • The Spanish monarchy grew very rich
Trade 

  • Trade because a world problem once again 
  • Spain had no real economic . growth
  • When the value of silver decreased Spain lost control in 1600 
  • Chines government took advantage of silver more than Spain and put it to use
  • Silver was used in Japan to unify the country --> Helped develop industry & agriculture -->  Improve Chinas economy --> Europe shared products wit Asia -->Raised the market
Fur Trade 

  • 1500 Europe supply of fur was demolished 
  • French, British, and Dutch had competition for the fur of North America --> led to North America Fur Trade
  • Europeans mainly traded fur and skins with the Indians instead of hunting and trapping themselves 
  •  Due to fur trade, animals were near extinction 
  • 1760 trade was profitable to the Indians because they received many goods of real value in return
  • Fur trade caused several of inter Indian warfare 
  • Indians depended on Europeans for... cooking pots, iron tools, strong trade system, and gun powder
  • Russians had private hunters and trappers who provided fur instead of commercial agreements 
Trans Atlantic Trade Rout 
  • 11 million people were sent to America from Africa 
  • Millions were killed on the voyage to America 
  • Africans also sold slaves to Europeans 
  • Atlantic slave trade preferred male slaves whereas the Islamic world preferred female slaves 
  • Africans were mainly sources of America 
  • Drove by European demand 
  • The role of the African slave trade was to capture and sell slaves

Chapter 3

States and Empires in Eurasia Strayers definition of an empire- First definition- political system with coercive power. Second definition- larger, more aggressive states that conquers other states, used their natural resources,  and rules a multiethnic state under a common political system. -They are conquering other people to build a greater empire, they are conquering other ethnic groups not just one this forming diversity in the empire. The political views on how to keep charge on all the people coming into the empire was also something that had to be determined. They would also take the conquered peoples food in order for them to survive. I think it is interesting to see how in the beginning of the chapter Strayer gives a subtle very simple answer to the definition of an empire but by the end he gives a more elaborate definition. Chapter 4

China Ways to maintain order ~ ~ ~ Legalism- people who followed believed that people where self serving because of this in order to keep these people doing good they had to be rewarded highly and in order to keep these people from doing bad they had to be punished very bad. -Chinas first emperor, Qin Shihuangdi, used legalism to keep order. Confucius ~ ~ ~ - Confucius believed he had found a way for social harmony. He remained a teacher and a thinker, When he died his students collected his teaching and created the Analects. Scholars took this and created a body of thought known as Confucianism. - Confucianism taught a strong moral of example that the social superior should teach the rest of the people how to behave.
